Affirmation balances on the hinges between imagined experience and lived experience. Within this work, on one monitor is my Father as he discusses his experience and of having cancer. The other monitor shows my Mother, as she reacts to my Father’s description of his illness. There is no sound from her monitor, instead it is my Father’s voice which narrates her changing expression. Affirmation explores transitional relationships, the reliance on an ‘other’, the care and time taken by that ‘other’ and the self sacrifice that this entails. The both the title and layout suggests to the viewer that my Mother’s understanding of my Father’s responses are affirmed rather than suprised.
